Description Write a 3000 word essay plus a clear ABSTRACT (at the beginning of the paper) on how Mass Media influences self-perception of an individual. Use the textbook “A Cognitive Psychology of Mass Communication” by Richard Jackson Harris and Fred W. Sanborn – chapter 4: “Media Portrayals of Groups: Distorted Social Mirrors” as a guideline and inspiration for the bulk of the essay. Harris and Sanborn’s textbook does not provide sufficient detail to be acceptable sources for a research paper. They do provide good starting place however for direction and inspiration for the essay. Topics that should be discussed throughout the entirety of the essay (in no particular order): 1. How mass media resources portray people and how that can lead to insecurity. Specifically use research about how magazine’s and television shows portray women, and how that affects how a “real life” woman feels about herself and what she should look like. (Ie. eating disorders, anxiety, depression, insecurity etc…) 2. Discuss research about social networking sites (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) and how they influence how individuals thinks. Discuss how users of these social networking sites compare themselves to their followers and how that can negatively impact individuals (Ie. eating disorders, anxiety, depression, insecurity etc…) 3. The view of men, and how mass media portrays the roles of men. Ie) strong, emotionless, providers, physical appearance and domestic roles. Discuss how these portrayals influence the psyche of males. 4. Discuss the four stages of Minority Portrayals – non-recognition – ridicule – regulation -respect Discuss how different races are portrayed in the media (African Americans, Latino/as, Native Americans, Arabs and Arab Americans) and how those portrayals affect the psyche of diverse groups. All of the above should be well researched, using Canadian sources only. Provide the Canadian context through the use of current events or focusing on the most recent technologies. Note that your research paper must address the psychological aspects of the mass media. You will need to locate and use 8 primary source materials and published, original studies for your research. If you cannot locate primary material, look for acceptable secondary sources books or review articles written by someone with appropriate academic credentials that criticize a piece of original research or compare several pieces of research on a single issue. Attached in the additional files, are the expectation for the outline of the paper, as well as the the grading rubric that will be used. Everything on the grading criterial should be clear and included in the essay.
